Bua Thong Sticky Waterfalls
“You can CLIMB the waterfall??? Huh???”
What a gravity-defying waterfall, this one. Unlike the typical waterfall attractions where visitors could swim in pools at the foot of the falls, Bua Thong Sticky Waterfalls take it up a notch because you can literally climb them from bottom to top. You have to try it yourself to truly understand what we are talking about!
Coated with limestone and mineral deposits, the waterfall has a rough texture that gives the friction you need to climb it. Over the years, the national park management has also installed various safety features such as ropes, wooden railings, and signages to point to safe routes.
Start your fascinating adventure by climbing the stairs down to the bottom of the waterfall. Then try your feet at climbing up the limestone surfaces. You can even sit on the waterfall and enjoy the water gushing over you. Be challenged by how you could scale the waterfall at seemingly hard to climb spots.
For those who do not want to climb the waterfall and get wet, you could also enjoy the attraction by going on short hiking trails. There are 2 – one around the waterfall and the other to the source of the waterfall. Locals also love enjoying picnics here with their families.

5. After many years and trips to Bua Thong Sticky Waterfalls, I’ve (Sheryl) figured that the best and most comfortable thing to wear for me is a light dri-fit shirt and yoga pants! It’s modest, quick drying, and will protect your legs from scratches. Whee.

Transport directions: From Chiang Mai City, head up Route 1001. Nearing the waterfall, look out for the turn-off on the right side. It’s about 1.5 hours drive from the city.
